About the Project
This project focuses on the comprehensive reconstruction of North Road, spanning from the intersection of CR 28 to East Avenue (approximately 4,600 linear feet), along with the resurfacing of an additional 350 linear feet to the intersection of Sand Hill Road.

Key enhancements include shifting travel lanes north by 3 to 4 feet, the installation of mountable curbs, and the addition of a multi-use concrete trail on the south side of the road. The updated highway design will feature two 11-foot wide travel lanes, two 2-foot wide shoulders, mountable curbs, and an eight-foot wide sidewalk.

Significant improvements involve a new underdrain system, a storm sewer system, and the replacement of a major cross culvert near Cayuga Road with a 6-foot by 4-foot precast box culvert. Additional enhancements include a sidewalk extension along the west side of East Street, connecting to the existing pathway leading to Canandaigua Academy High School.

Moreover, the project will introduce a small pocket park near the intersection of CR 28 and North Road, enhancing the community space. This initiative aims to ensure safe access to the school by linking the existing sidewalk near Tim Horton’s along the former North Road right-of-way to the school entrance on East Avenue.

Why Now?
-
Need for Multi-Modal Transportation: Previous town studies and plans have identified a significant lack of multi-modal transportation options along the existing road.

-
Traffic Demands: The current volume and weight of traffic on North Road necessitate a more robust pavement section, as the northern lane is experiencing ruts and deterioration.

-
Aging Drainage System: The existing drainage system is beyond its useful life and is ineffective at properly draining the road base, leading to widespread alligator cracking.

-
Ongoing Repairs: Frequent water main breaks have resulted in numerous pavement patches, contributing to the road’s overall deterioration.

-
Long-Term Planning: This project has been in consideration for nearly a decade, awaiting the completion of the water main replacement, which has now been successfully finished.
